Guidelines for Girl Artists
New Moon is the magazine created by girls for all girls who want their voices heard and their dreams taken seriously. New Moon is completely edited by a Girls Editorial Board (a group of girls ages 8 to 12) and they want to hear from YOU!
First choose an issue's theme you would like to illustrate.

Second draw a sketch of your cover art idea. A sketch is a pencil or pen drawing of your cover art. Covers should be pro-girl and incorporate girls in the theme. Your sketch doesn't need to have color or all of the details yet. Templates are available so you can see how big the picture should be-if you'd like a template, send a 9x12" self-addressed, stamped envelope (with $.87 postage) to New Moon Cover Art, 2 W. First Street #101, Duluth , MN 55802.
Helpful Hints
- The drawing in your sketch should contain one main image on the front. The main image should be on the right side of the page.
- If your artwork gets chosen, the edge of the final work (about ¼ inch) will be cut off, so be sure that that area is drawn or colored in on the final version, but that nothing important fills it. This process is called bleeding and ensures that no white space will show on the actual magazine covers.
- Remember to keep the center line in mind when drawing your sketch. The fold shouldn't cut anything important in half.
- To show the Girls Editorial Board how you use color, send color copies of past paintings and drawings. That will give the editors an idea of what your sketch will look like after it's colored.
- Don't send a finished painting or drawing. If your artwork is chosen, you might have to make changes to it.
Third send your sketch to New Moon Cover Art, 2 W. First Street #101, Duluth , MN 55802.
After we receive your sketch, the Girls Editorial Board will decide whether or not they want you to make a final cover. If you want us to return your sample sketches, please let us know and include return postage. We will let you know as soon as we can if we decide to use your cover, but it may take at least four months. We can't wait to see your work!
If you don't want to illustrate a cover, there are other ways to get your artwork published in New Moon:
Draw Luna: What do you think Luna looks like? Create your artwork on unlined paper.
Luna's Art Gallery: Send us drawings, paintings, or photography you've done. Everything you submit should be on unlined paper.
Submission Requirements Checklist:
- Write the name of the department (like "Draw Luna") on your envelope. Do NOT send artwork by email.
- Include your name, age, address, and phone number on each submission.
- Keep a copy of your work for yourself, because we can't return it.
