New Moon

Editorial Guidelines for Girl Writers

New Moon is the magazine created by girls for all girls who want their voices heard and their dreams taken seriously. New Moon is completely edited by a Girls Editorial Board (girls ages 8 to 12) and they want to hear from YOU!

So tell us... What's on your mind? What are your dreams? What do you worry about? What makes you happy? What drives you crazy?

Every issue, we fill the following departments with your short writing:

  • Dear Luna: The voice of New Moon (letters on any topic under the sun).
  • How Aggravating!: Vent about how you notice sexism and prejudice.
  • Howling at the Moon: Tell us about how you and others experience equality.
  • Ask A Girl: Share problems and solutions with other girls.
  • Voice Box: Give us your opinions of current controversies
  • Poetry: Let your muse run free! (Poems from girls between the ages of 8 and 12 only, please).

If you've written a longer piece (600 - 1,200 words), you can submit it as a feature:

Profile: Tell us about great things that girls and women are doing today!
Personal Essay: Tell us about an experience that you went through.
Herstory: Write about girls and women from history.
Women's Work: Do you know a woman who has an interesting job? Write about her.
Global Village: Girls around the world write about their lives (special guidelines). Email girl@newmoon.org for more details.
Go, Girl!: Are you an activist? An adventurer? Tell us about how you're on the go-for a cause, or just for the fun of it!
Book Review: Read a book you just can't stop thinking about? Tell us about it! (We prefer books by women authors with strong girl characters!)
Fiction: Share your short stories-we love short stories that have strong, realistic girls as the main characters!

We can't wait to hear from you!

You'll have a better chance of getting published if your features, fiction, or poetry match our themes!

Submission Requirements Checklist:

Write the name of the department (like "Dear Luna ") on your envelope OR on the subject line of your email message. (We prefer email submissions!)

Include your name, age, address, and phone number on each submission. Write your name and the department name on each page you send. Keep a copy of your work for yourself, because we can't return it. We read EVERYTHING you send us, and we send postcards or emails to everyone who writes. Although we can't let you know in advance if we're going to publish your letters, we will let you know if we publish your feature story, poetry, drawing of Luna , or cover art in New Moon-and we'll pay you for it!

New Moon's Hate Speech Policy

New Moon will not print material that contains hate speech. We define hate speech as follows:

  • speech that shows a prejudice or a harmful stereotype
  • negative speech directed at a specific group of people
  • speech that uses words such as "you're wrong," or "you're bad," rather than, "I disagree"
  • speech that could hurt someone
  • speech that attacks a part of a person's identity that they can't change rather than a specific opinion.

Hate speech has contributed to large scale destruction and genocide throughout the world and throughout history. New Moon is a safe place for all girls, which is why we will not tolerate hate speech.
